Myocardial Fibrosis

Meaning

Myocardial fibrosis is a pathological process involving the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix proteins, primarily collagen, within the muscular walls of the heart, the myocardium. This structural remodeling replaces functional heart muscle cells with stiff, non-contractile connective tissue, significantly impairing cardiac function and electrical signaling. Clinically, it is a key underlying factor in the development of heart failure, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death. The presence of myocardial fibrosis is a strong prognostic indicator of adverse cardiovascular outcomes.
