Myocardial Dysfunction

Meaning

Myocardial Dysfunction is a general clinical term encompassing any impairment in the functional capacity of the myocardium, which is the muscular tissue of the heart responsible for pumping blood. This condition is characterized by a reduction in the heart’s ability to either contract effectively during systole or relax and fill adequately during diastole. Compromised myocardial function leads to a reduced cardiac output, subsequently impairing systemic oxygen and nutrient delivery to peripheral tissues.
