Myocardial Contractility

Meaning

Myocardial contractility refers to the intrinsic ability of the heart muscle cells, known as cardiomyocytes, to generate force and shorten, thereby ejecting blood into the circulation. This property represents the heart’s inherent pumping strength, independent of the volume of blood filling the chambers or the resistance against which it must pump. It is a fundamental determinant of cardiac performance and the efficiency of blood distribution throughout the body.
