Myelin Sheath

Meaning

The Myelin Sheath is a specialized lipid-rich insulating layer encasing nerve fibers, or axons, within the nervous system. Glial cells—oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system and Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system—form this structure. Its primary role is to facilitate rapid, efficient electrical signal transmission along neuronal pathways, ensuring prompt communication.
