Mycoestrogens

Meaning

Mycoestrogens are a class of non-steroidal compounds produced by fungi, primarily molds, that possess the ability to interact with estrogen receptors in the human body, thereby mimicking or modulating the effects of endogenous estrogens. These compounds, such as zearalenone, are classified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals and can be found in contaminated grains and feeds. Clinically, exposure to mycoestrogens is a concern because they can disrupt the delicate balance of the endocrine system, potentially contributing to reproductive dysfunction and other hormonal imbalances.
