Muscle Damage

Meaning

Muscle Damage, specifically Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage (EIMD), is the physiological disruption of the myofibrils and sarcolemma of skeletal muscle fibers that occurs primarily following unaccustomed or high-intensity eccentric exercise. Clinically, this damage is characterized by delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), transient loss of muscle force, and the efflux of intramuscular proteins like creatine kinase into the bloodstream. This controlled injury is a necessary biological stimulus for initiating the repair and adaptive processes that ultimately lead to muscle hypertrophy and strength gains, provided adequate recovery and nutritional support are implemented. Managing the inflammatory response is key to effective repair.
