Muscle Action Potential

Meaning

A Muscle Action Potential is a transient, rapid, and self-propagating electrical depolarization and repolarization event that travels along the sarcolemma, the muscle cell membrane. This electrical signal is the essential link that translates the neural command from the motor neuron into a mechanical muscle contraction. The successful propagation of the action potential is critical for ensuring a coordinated and forceful contraction of the entire muscle fiber. This all-or-none event precedes the actual force generation.
