Multiple Sensitivities

Meaning

Multiple sensitivities, often referred to clinically as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) or environmental intolerance, describes a complex, chronic condition characterized by recurrent symptoms affecting multiple organ systems in response to low-level exposure to various chemically unrelated compounds. These reactions are not mediated by classical IgE-dependent allergy but are thought to involve a heightened neurobiological or inflammatory response to environmental triggers, including fragrances, pesticides, and certain foods. This condition presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, often requiring a comprehensive approach that considers immune, neurological, and endocrine system dysregulation.
