Multiple Sclerosis

Meaning

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive, and often debilitating autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the protective myelin sheath covering nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. This demyelination disrupts the rapid, efficient communication between the brain and the rest of the body, leading to a wide spectrum of neurological symptoms, including severe fatigue, mobility issues, vision problems, and cognitive changes. The disease course is highly variable, often characterized by periods of relapses and remissions.
