Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia

Meaning

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia, or MEN, is a collective term for a group of rare, genetically inherited disorders characterized by the concurrent development of both hyperplastic and neoplastic lesions in two or more anatomically distinct endocrine glands. These syndromes are clinically categorized into distinct types, such as MEN type 1 and MEN type 2, with each type defined by a specific constellation of characteristic tumors and a distinct, underlying germline gene mutation. Clinical management is inherently complex, requiring vigilant and proactive screening alongside a multidisciplinary intervention strategy due to the potential for aggressive tumor behavior and the resulting significant hormonal overproduction.
