Mucosal Turnover

Meaning

Mucosal Turnover is the rapid, continuous process of cellular proliferation, differentiation, and shedding that maintains the integrity and function of the intestinal epithelial lining, a critical component of the gastrointestinal tract. The entire epithelial layer of the gut is replaced approximately every three to five days, making it one of the most metabolically active tissues in the body. Efficient mucosal turnover is essential for maintaining the physical barrier against luminal contents and ensuring proper nutrient absorption and immune exclusion.
