Mucosal Barrier

Meaning

The Mucosal Barrier is the complex, multi-layered protective interface lining the body’s internal cavities and organs, including the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tracts. It consists of a layer of mucus, a single layer of epithelial cells joined by tight junctions, and an underlying immune cell compartment. This barrier’s primary function is to permit selective absorption of nutrients and water while simultaneously preventing the entry of pathogens, toxins, and undigested food particles into the systemic circulation.
