Mucoadhesive Polymers

Meaning

Mucoadhesive polymers are specialized macromolecules that, when applied to a mucosal surface, adhere to the mucus layer for an extended period through various physiochemical interactions. This adhesive property is leveraged in advanced drug delivery to prolong the contact time between a therapeutic agent and the absorption site, such as the nasal, buccal, or vaginal mucosa. In hormonal therapy, they are used to enhance the local bioavailability and systemic absorption of steroid hormones or peptides.
