MTNR1B Gene

Meaning

The MTNR1B Gene encodes the Melatonin Receptor Type 1B, a critical G-protein coupled receptor responsible for mediating the effects of the hormone melatonin, particularly in the regulation of circadian rhythm and sleep timing. Genetic variations, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), within this gene are clinically significant because they can alter the receptor’s function, often resulting in reduced sensitivity to melatonin signaling. This decreased sensitivity is associated with a propensity for elevated fasting glucose levels and an increased risk for type 2 diabetes.
