Motor Skills

Meaning

Motor skills are the coordinated, goal-directed movements of the body and limbs, resulting from the complex interplay between the central nervous system, peripheral nerves, and the musculoskeletal system. These skills are broadly categorized as gross motor skills, involving large muscle groups, and fine motor skills, requiring precise, small muscle control. From a hormonal health perspective, the integrity and execution of motor skills are significantly influenced by circulating levels of neuroactive steroids, thyroid hormones, and growth factors. Declines in motor function can often signal underlying neuro-endocrine changes associated with aging or disease.
