Morning Light Exposure Therapy

Meaning

Morning Light Exposure Therapy is a non-pharmacological, chronobiological intervention that involves deliberately exposing the eyes to bright, natural or simulated light within the first hour of waking. This practice is clinically utilized to acutely suppress melatonin production and activate the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN), the body’s master circadian pacemaker. The therapeutic goal is to strengthen the amplitude and phase-advance the circadian rhythm, thereby improving sleep quality, enhancing diurnal energy levels, and optimizing the timing of the cortisol awakening response. It is a foundational strategy for regulating the sleep-wake cycle and neuroendocrine function.
