Mood Disorders

Meaning

A category of mental health conditions characterized by a significant and persistent disturbance in a person’s emotional state, resulting in a clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. These disorders, including major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, are complex neurobiological conditions that often involve dysregulation of neurotransmitters and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The bidirectional relationship between hormonal health and emotional well-being is a critical area of clinical focus.
