Mononuclear Phagocyte System

Meaning

The Mononuclear Phagocyte System (MPS) is a critical component of the innate immune system, consisting of monocytes circulating in the blood and their tissue-resident derivatives, such as macrophages and Kupffer cells. This system is responsible for phagocytosis—the engulfment and destruction of cellular debris, foreign pathogens, and senescent red blood cells. In the context of hormonal health, the MPS plays a significant role in inflammation regulation and the clearance of hormone metabolites and carrier proteins from circulation, directly influencing hormone half-life and bioavailability. Optimal function of the MPS is essential for maintaining a healthy inflammatory baseline and efficient metabolic clearance.
