Monogenic Diabetes

Meaning

A group of rare, highly penetrant forms of diabetes mellitus caused by a mutation in a single gene, most commonly affecting pancreatic beta-cell function, such as Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY). Unlike Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, monogenic forms often present with specific inheritance patterns and unique physiological characteristics regarding insulin secretion dynamics. Precise genetic diagnosis is essential for targeted management.
