Monogenic Conditions

Meaning

Monogenic conditions, also known as single-gene disorders, are diseases or traits caused by a mutation or alteration in a single, specific gene within the human genome. These conditions typically follow classic Mendelian patterns of inheritance, such as autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, or X-linked. In the endocrine domain, examples include Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) or certain forms of Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY). Identifying the precise genetic defect is critical for accurate diagnosis, genetic counseling, and potentially for guiding highly specific, targeted therapeutic interventions.
