Monoamine Oxidases

Meaning

Monoamine Oxidases (MAOs) are flavin adenine dinucleotide-dependent enzymes that catalyze the oxidative deamination of monoamines, including crucial neurotransmitters. They are pivotal in regulating monoamine concentrations within the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, influencing physiological and psychological processes. Their primary function involves removing an amino group from a monoamine, forming an aldehyde, ammonia, and hydrogen peroxide.
