Molecular Chaperones

Meaning

Molecular chaperones are a diverse group of specialized proteins found ubiquitously within cells that function to assist in the correct folding, assembly, transport, and degradation of other polypeptide chains, preventing their aggregation into non-functional or toxic structures. They are essential components of the cellular quality control system, maintaining proteostasis, which is absolutely critical for the proper function of sensitive hormone receptors and complex signaling molecules. These protective proteins are often dramatically upregulated in response to various forms of cellular stress, acting as a vital defense mechanism.
