Moisture Retention

Meaning

Moisture retention, in the context of skin health, is the physiological capacity of the epidermis to minimize transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and maintain an optimal level of hydration within the stratum corneum and deeper dermal layers. This function is primarily dependent on the integrity of the skin’s lipid barrier and the presence of Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs). Effective moisture retention is essential for skin barrier function, suppleness, resilience, and a youthful appearance. Compromised retention is a key factor in dry, irritated, and aged skin.
