MnSOD, or Manganese Superoxide Dismutase, is a critical antioxidant enzyme located exclusively within the mitochondrial matrix, serving as the first and most essential line of defense against damaging reactive oxygen species (ROS). Specifically, it catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide anions, a toxic byproduct of cellular respiration, into less harmful hydrogen peroxide.
