Mitohormesis Pathways

Meaning

A biological phenomenon where a low-level, transient stressor, specifically one targeting mitochondrial function, induces an adaptive protective response that ultimately enhances cellular resilience and longevity. This process involves a mild, controlled increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) which paradoxically triggers the activation of endogenous antioxidant defenses and repair mechanisms. It is a key mechanism for improving mitochondrial quality control.
