Mitogenic Signaling

Meaning

Mitogenic Signaling refers to the specific cellular communication pathways that, when activated, promote and stimulate cell division, or mitosis. These cascades are typically initiated by extracellular signals, such as growth factors or certain hormones, binding to their corresponding cell surface receptors. Uncontrolled or aberrant mitogenic signaling is a hallmark of various pathological states, including cancer and benign tissue overgrowth. The process is tightly regulated in healthy tissues to maintain cell number homeostasis.
