Meaning

The Mitochondrial Respiratory Chain, also known as the Electron Transport Chain (ETC), is a series of four protein complexes and two mobile electron carriers embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane responsible for the final, highly efficient stage of aerobic cellular respiration. Its function is to generate a proton gradient across the membrane, which is then utilized by ATP synthase (Complex V) to produce the vast majority of the cell’s adenosine triphosphate (ATP) energy currency. The integrity of this chain is paramount for cellular vitality and overall metabolic health.
