Mitochondrial Dysfunction Menopause

Meaning

Mitochondrial dysfunction in menopause refers to the impairment of the cellular powerhouses, the mitochondria, which is significantly exacerbated by the decline in estrogen during the menopausal transition. This dysfunction is characterized by reduced efficiency in oxidative phosphorylation, decreased ATP production, and increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). It is a key molecular event underlying the systemic symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, cognitive decline, and accelerated aging.
