MITF Transcription Factor

Meaning

MITF, or Microphthalmia-associated Transcription Factor, is a master regulatory protein that controls the expression of numerous genes essential for the development, survival, and function of various cell types, most notably melanocytes and mast cells. In the skin, MITF is the critical downstream effector that dictates the rate of melanogenesis and cellular proliferation, playing a pivotal role in pigmentation and having direct implications for melanoma pathogenesis. Its activity is tightly regulated by upstream hormonal and growth factor signaling.
