Mild Cognitive Impairment

Meaning

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a clinical state characterized by a measurable decline in cognitive abilities, such as memory or thinking skills, that is noticeable to the individual and close contacts but does not significantly interfere with the person’s independence in daily life. This condition represents a transitional stage between the cognitive changes of normal aging and the more severe deficits seen in dementia. Clinically, identifying MCI is crucial because individuals are at an elevated risk for progression to Alzheimer’s disease or other neurodegenerative disorders.
