Micronutrient Malabsorption

Meaning

Micronutrient Malabsorption is a clinical condition defined by the impaired uptake and assimilation of essential vitamins and trace minerals across the gastrointestinal mucosa, resulting in systemic deficiencies despite seemingly adequate dietary intake. This failure in absorption can be precipitated by a variety of gastrointestinal pathologies, including celiac disease, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, or significant surgical alterations that reduce the functional surface area of the small intestine. Sustained malabsorption can profoundly compromise hormonal synthesis, immune function, and bone density, as many enzymes and endocrine processes rely on these cofactors. Identifying and correcting the underlying absorptive defect is paramount for restoring overall physiological balance.
