Microglial Priming

Meaning

Microglial Priming is a neurobiological state where microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system, adopt a heightened, sensitive phenotype in response to chronic systemic inflammation, aging, or persistent hormonal dysregulation. In this primed state, these cells are not yet fully activated but are poised to launch an exaggerated, potentially damaging inflammatory response upon encountering a secondary trigger. This cellular mechanism is highly relevant to hormonal health, as chronic stress and associated HPA axis dysfunction can contribute to the pro-inflammatory environment that primes microglia. This state is implicated in the pathophysiology of various neurodegenerative and mood disorders.
