Microglia Activity

Meaning

Microglia activity refers to the dynamic functional state of microglia, which are the resident immune cells and primary form of active immune defense in the central nervous system (CNS). These cells act as the brain’s macrophages, constantly surveying the neural environment for pathogens, damaged cells, and plaques. Their activity is crucial for neurodevelopment, synaptic pruning, and maintaining brain homeostasis, but dysregulated activity is implicated in neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
