Microbiota Diversity

Meaning

Microbiota diversity refers to the richness and evenness of the various species of microorganisms residing within a specific biological niche, most notably the gut, a critical factor for overall metabolic and endocrine health. A high degree of diversity is clinically associated with a more resilient ecosystem, capable of performing a wider array of biochemical functions, including the production of short-chain fatty acids and the regulation of hormone metabolism. Reduced diversity, known as dysbiosis, is often linked to inflammatory states and impaired physiological function.
