Methylation processes encompass a fundamental group of biochemical reactions involving the transfer of a single carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms (a methyl group) from a donor molecule, primarily S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), to a recipient molecule, such as DNA, proteins, or hormones. These processes are essential for numerous physiological functions, including gene expression regulation (epigenetics), neurotransmitter synthesis, detoxification, and the metabolism of hormones like estrogen. Impaired methylation capacity is clinically linked to various health issues and hormonal imbalances.
