Methyl-Donating Nutrients

Meaning

Methyl-donating nutrients are specific vitamins and compounds, such as folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, betaine, and choline, that carry and donate methyl groups (a carbon atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms) to other molecules in the body. This process, known as methylation, is a fundamental biochemical reaction essential for DNA repair, gene expression regulation, detoxification, and the synthesis of neurotransmitters and hormones. Adequate intake of these nutrients is vital for supporting optimal epigenetic health and metabolic function. Deficiencies can impair hormonal clearance and contribute to DNA instability.
