Methionine Sulfoxide

Meaning

An oxidized derivative of the essential amino acid methionine, formed when methionine is exposed to reactive oxygen species (ROS) during oxidative stress. The accumulation of this modified amino acid within proteins is a form of reversible oxidative damage, serving as a key molecular marker of cellular stress and aging. Its presence can impair protein function, but the body possesses a repair mechanism to restore it.
