Methionine Oxidation

Meaning

Methionine Oxidation is a post-translational modification where the amino acid methionine, a critical residue in many proteins, is chemically altered by reactive oxygen species (ROS) to form methionine sulfoxide. This modification is particularly detrimental as it can significantly alter the structure and function of proteins, including key enzymes, transcription factors, and hormonal receptors, leading to cellular dysfunction and compromised biological signaling. It is a direct marker and mechanism of oxidative stress within the cellular environment.
