Metainflammation

Meaning

A term used to describe a chronic, low-grade, and metabolically-driven inflammatory state that often arises in the context of nutrient excess and obesity. Unlike acute inflammation, this condition is characterized by a persistent, subtle elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, particularly within metabolic tissues like adipose tissue, liver, and muscle. This sustained immune activation is a key driver of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, representing a critical link between metabolism and the immune system. It fundamentally disrupts normal endocrine signaling.
