Metaflammation

Meaning

Metaflammation is a specific clinical term used to describe the chronic, low-grade, sterile inflammatory state that is fundamentally linked to the pathogenesis of various metabolic disorders, including obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. This state is characterized by the persistent, inappropriate activation of innate immune pathways within key metabolic tissues, such as the liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle, primarily driven by nutrient overload and subsequent cellular stress. Recognizing metaflammation is crucial, as it represents the core interface where the immune and endocrine systems converge to drive metabolic dysfunction.
