Metabolomics

Meaning

Metabolomics is the comprehensive, systematic study of small-molecule metabolites—the metabolome—within a biological system, such as a cell, tissue, or organism. This ‘omics’ discipline provides a functional snapshot of the body’s current physiological state, as the metabolome is the final downstream output of genetic, transcriptomic, and proteomic processes, uniquely reflecting both endogenous biochemistry and external influences like diet and environment. Clinically, metabolomics offers a powerful diagnostic tool for identifying subtle metabolic dysregulations and personalized therapeutic targets in conditions ranging from hormonal imbalance to chronic disease.
