Metabolizer Phenotype

Meaning

Metabolizer Phenotype describes the classification of an individual based on the rate and efficiency at which they metabolize specific drugs or hormones, a characteristic largely determined by genetic variations in drug-metabolizing enzymes, particularly the Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. Phenotypes range from poor to ultrarapid metabolizers, directly influencing the circulating concentration of a therapeutic agent and thus affecting its efficacy and potential for toxicity. Clinical dosing strategies in hormonal therapy often require consideration of this phenotype.
