Metabolic Syndrome (MetS)

Meaning

Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a clinical designation for a cluster of interconnected metabolic risk factors that significantly increase an individual’s long-term risk of developing cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The diagnosis is confirmed by the presence of any three of five specific criteria: elevated waist circumference (central obesity), elevated blood pressure, high fasting glucose, high serum triglycerides, and reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. It fundamentally represents a state of chronic metabolic dysfunction often rooted in systemic insulin resistance.
