Metabolic Stress

Meaning

Metabolic stress is a state of significant cellular perturbation resulting from a sustained imbalance between the supply of metabolic substrates and the cellular capacity to process them, or an accumulation of toxic metabolic byproducts. This stress often manifests as chronic oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and impaired insulin signaling within metabolically active tissues like muscle and liver. Chronic metabolic stress is now recognized as a central, non-specific driver in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes, and various chronic degenerative diseases.
