Metabolic Shifts

Meaning

Metabolic shifts are fundamental, systemic alterations in the body’s primary energy production and utilization pathways, moving from one dominant fuel source or metabolic state to another. These shifts can be physiological, such as transitioning from glucose-based metabolism during feeding to fatty acid oxidation during fasting, or pathological, as seen in insulin resistance or chronic disease states. Hormonal signals, particularly insulin, glucagon, and cortisol, are the primary drivers regulating these changes.
