Metabolic Inertia

Meaning

A physiological state characterized by a decreased flexibility and sluggishness in the body’s ability to rapidly switch between different fuel sources, such as carbohydrates and fats, or to appropriately adjust metabolic rate in response to caloric changes. This inertia reflects a loss of metabolic adaptability, often seen in conditions like insulin resistance and obesity, hindering effective weight management and energy balance. It is a key indicator of poor underlying metabolic health.
