Metabolic Hypogonadism

Meaning

Metabolic Hypogonadism refers to a specific type of secondary hypogonadism where the suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is directly attributable to systemic metabolic derangements, such as obesity, insulin resistance, or chronic nutritional stress. This condition is characterized by low circulating levels of gonadal hormones, like testosterone or estrogen, often accompanied by inappropriately low or normal gonadotropin levels. Addressing the underlying metabolic dysfunction is frequently the most effective therapeutic strategy for restoring normal gonadal function. This is a common clinical finding in individuals with significant cardiometabolic risk factors.
