Metabolic Flexibility

Meaning

Metabolic Flexibility is the physiological capacity of an organism to efficiently switch between utilizing carbohydrates (glucose) and fats (fatty acids) as primary fuel sources based on substrate availability and immediate energy demand. A high degree of flexibility is indicative of robust mitochondrial health and optimal insulin sensitivity across muscle and adipose tissues. Conversely, inflexibility—the inability to effectively burn fat when glucose is scarce—is a hallmark of pre-diabetic states and chronic fatigue. This adaptability is central to sustained energy.
