Metabolic Flexibility Indexing

Meaning

Metabolic Flexibility Indexing quantifies the dynamic capacity of an organism, or specific tissues, to efficiently transition fuel utilization between carbohydrate oxidation and fat oxidation based on immediate substrate availability. True metabolic health requires high flexibility, allowing rapid adaptation to fed or fasted states without undue metabolic stress. Low flexibility, or metabolic inflexibility, often manifests as an inability to effectively burn fat, leading to ectopic lipid accumulation. This indexing provides insight into mitochondrial health.
