Metabolic Decoupling

Meaning

Metabolic Decoupling is a highly specific physiological process, primarily occurring in the mitochondria, where the energy-generating process of the electron transport chain is intentionally separated from the production of ATP. This action allows the energy from nutrient oxidation to be dissipated as heat instead of being fully converted into chemical energy. Clinically, this process can be leveraged to increase overall metabolic rate, promote fat burning, and reduce the generation of reactive oxygen species, thereby offering a therapeutic target for weight management and cellular longevity.
